No & General Sailing Days

January 3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th & 31st No Water and bad weather
February 7th, 14th, 21st & 28th No Water and bad weather
March 7th Very choppy water due to wind blowing directly down the lagoon from VBites. 12 members turned up but only 4 sailing (but no organised racing) due water state and bitter wind.
March 14th No sailing due Model Power Boat Race 2nd day.
March 21st The first day's real sailing weather of the year with sunshine and a great day with nine members trying out their different types of boats (but no organised racing). There was very little wind at the start of the day but it filled in later, it was great to everybody having fun.
April 18th Lashing down with rain, so racing abandoned.
July 4th AMBRO Race. What a slow and boring day. However, Doug Genders ran mini races for Hove members both for One metre and then Fiesta's.
October 3rd Planned for One Metre Pairs but number 3 rig was required and water was very, very choppy - Sailing abandoned.
November 7th Water being drained to clean Lagoon, down about one foot. OK for Fiesta's so raced six boats but didn't score as boats were shared such that everyone (eight skippers) had a good days sailing.
November 14th AGM 10:30 at The Amsterdam, 467 Upper Shoreham Rd, BN4 35WQ. Tidy up of Club house afterwards.
November 21st & 28th TO BE ADVISED

A really good day, Bill Parker came with Peter Constable and joined in, great guy and very helpful, helped put away without being asked, uses noddle.
This was a very enjoyable event with nine boats racing. The weather started out with little or no wind although 10-12 mph was forecast. Ray Baxter and Peter Constable acted as Observers together with one skipper off each race. The last four races had a little more wind but we also took the opportunity to wash off our boats in fresh water - it rained continually, that is until all races were completed. Many thanks to Ray, Peter and all the skippers for a very enjoyable days racing with 1st place going to John Smith and 2nd place going to Bill Parker who had made a 120 mile round trip to be with us, and spent a good deal of time assisting in setting up boats. Thanks

Thanks

Well done to Rob, Rick and Paul who were all trying sailing for the first time.
You all did very well as there is a great deal to take in at first.

We had a brilliant day of Fiesta Racing with Peter Constable acting as OOD supplying a mine of information and debriefing after every race. Each person racing had to do one Observer duty during the days racing. There were seven racing today, including Ray, in fairly heavy wind conditions. The course was kept reasonably short so one could easily see the buoys and we went round twice each race. There were lots of penalty turns done today with no questions, after contacts between boats, probably because people were advised who had right of way and why. This week Peter introduced a course board and it was suggested that a whistle would be useful to gather everyone together (not sure about that, there are a lot of dog's being walked that may all come running) although everyone was reasonably well attentive today, mainly because of the debrief after each race. All in All, everything went very well making it an enjoyable day, mainly due to Peter’s assistance and members wanting to learn. All we have to do now is to keep up the good work

Fiesta Nationals at Aylesbury

There really are ducks at Aylesbury.
Sunday August 15th, a fine if breezy morning, I picked John Cadenhead up at home at 7.00am and set of for Aylesbury and the Fiesta Nationals. The lake chosen by he organisers is a large open water fresh water with little in the way of wind restrictions near the end we were sailing on, plenty of ducks though, the wind was very keen, borderline top suit, if it was I0M. When we registered the boats were checked for legality, weighed to ensure we were not under the 1.5kg, even the super light boats had been ballasted up to comply. There were 16 boats entered, 12 actually started, the ravages of the wind and very choppy conditions reduced this to 8 by the lunch break, Johns boat was eating batteries at a rate, my sail servo expired and I lost two races changing servos, the racing was close and the difficulty in tacking at times made for interesting sailing, there were no protests resulting in meetings or time lost, all disputes were settled on the water, the friendly atmosphere and in the main adherence of the rules, and a firm OOD, kept the meeting going well. We raced eight races before the lunch break, when as well as a welcome break for a coffee and a sandwich we had a few minutes for running repairs, more batteries for Johns boat and a kicking strap repair for mine, after lunch it was back to even stonger winds for the remaining four races. The computer was then cranked up to produce the results, the winner and second place were a Father and Son team from Humberside sailing meticulously prepared, (look at the photos), and very well sailed boats, especially the winner, Josh a teenager who gave us all a lesson in "seeing the wind" and fair but firm sailing, very well done. We kept the flag flying for Hove with me taking third place and John not very far behind on points with fifth and not a sign of the ballasted lightweights. A very well run most enjoyable days sailing in good company.
Because of the lack of support and the unwillingness to travel by Fiesta skippers this type of open event is in danger of extinction, what a pity, these little boats are such good fun, perhaps we should look at hosting an open or two a Hove for 2011, we have the water and enough facilities, so please give it some thought so that the class does not disappear. Les Baker August 2010.
A big well done to Les and John.
